About Sharps Brewery
Sharp's Brewery is a celebrated Cornish brewery founded in 1994 by Bill Sharp in Rock, Cornwall. What began as a home brewing hobby transformed into one of Britain's most successful craft breweries, best known for creating Doom Bar - the UK's highest-selling cask ale. The brewery takes its name from founder Bill Sharp, who started brewing in a converted speedboat storage unit on Rock's Pityme Industrial Estate. The creation of Doom Bar came about through experimentation after Bill observed his father mixing beers at The Maltsters pub. The resulting amber ale was named after the notorious Doom Bar sandbank in the nearby Camel Estuary - a treacherous navigation hazard that has claimed many ships over the centuries. Doom Bar was first brewed in 1995 and quickly became the brewery's flagship beer, accounting for nearly 90% of sales. In 2019, it achieved the distinction of being the UK's highest-selling cask ale. The 4.0% ABV amber ale is renowned for its perfect balance of bitter and sweet flavours, with distinctive hoppy and malty notes. Sharp's has won over 150 brewing awards and was the official beer sponsor of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race from 2008 to 2012. In 2011, Molson Coors acquired Sharp's Brewery for £20 million, recognising the value of the Doom Bar brand. Despite corporate ownership, the brewery remains on its original Rock site with continued investment in facilities and brewing excellence. The range has expanded to include alcohol-free options like Doom Bar 0%, allowing more consumers to enjoy the classic Cornish taste.
