About Buffalo Trace
Buffalo Trace is a legendary Kentucky bourbon brand produced at America's oldest continuously operating distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. With distilling records dating back to 1775 and the first distillery structure built in 1812, this National Historic Landmark represents over two centuries of American whiskey-making heritage. The distillery was acquired by Sazerac Company in 1992 and renamed Buffalo Trace in 1999. The name pays tribute to the ancient buffalo trackway that crosses the Kentucky River in Franklin County—a trail that once guided migrating herds and early American pioneers. The flagship Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon, launched in August 1999, embodies this pioneering spirit with its rich caramel, vanilla, and oak character that has won countless international awards. The distillery's storied past includes ownership by bourbon legends Edmund H. Taylor (who named it O.F.C. Distillery in 1870) and George T. Stagg (who installed America's first climate-controlled warehouses in 1886). This innovative heritage continues today, with the distillery introducing Blanton's—the world's first single-barrel bourbon—revolutionising premium whiskey production. Beyond its namesake bourbon, Buffalo Trace Distillery produces some of the most coveted whiskeys in the world: Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve, Blanton's, Eagle Rare, E.H. Taylor, George T. Stagg, Elmer T. Lee, and Ancient Age. Designated a National Historic Landmark in 2013, Buffalo Trace remains a pilgrimage site for bourbon enthusiasts worldwide.
