About Black Sheep Brewery
Black Sheep Brewery embodies the spirit of Yorkshire brewing independence, founded in 1992 by Paul Theakston – the self-described 'black sheep' of one of England's most famous brewing families. After the family's original Theakston Brewery in Masham was sold to Scottish & Newcastle, Paul struck out on his own, purchasing the former Lightfoot's brewery site to start afresh and continue six generations of Theakston brewing tradition. The brewery's name captures this rebellious spirit perfectly. Paul's wife suggested 'Black Sheep' as a play on Masham's sheep-farming heritage and his maverick departure from the family business. The brewery uses traditional Yorkshire squares and a yeast strain dating back to the 1920s, producing well-hopped bitters that distinguish Black Sheep from the fruitier, yeastier styles of his former family brewery. Today, the sixth generation of Theakstons continues the legacy, with Paul's sons Rob (Managing Director since 2012) and Jo leading the family business. The brewery in Masham welcomes visitors to its visitor centre for tours and tastings, showcasing the craft behind beers that have become synonymous with Yorkshire brewing excellence. The flagship Black Sheep Best Bitter first flowed at the Bruce Arms in Masham in 1992. Compare Black Sheep Brewery prices at Grocefully to find the best deals on these authentic Yorkshire ales.
